Individual Therapy

Sometimes there is a clear reason to come to therapy. Sometimes there isn’t. You may be dealing with a specific problem, a difficult period, a relationship, a decision, or a major change. Or you may simply feel that something in your life isn’t working the way you want it to. You may want to understand yourself better, make sense of patterns that keep repeating, or have a place to think more honestly about what is happening.

Who tends to work well with me

I tend to work especially well with people who are used to figuring things out themselves, who have already thought a lot about what is bothering them, or who have tried therapy before and want something more direct and useful. You may already understand why you react a certain way and still keep reacting that way. You may know what you should do and still have trouble doing it. That is usually where we start: looking more closely at what is actually keeping the problem going and what may need to change. Sometimes that means questioning a way of thinking, changing a behavior, being more honest with yourself, or recognizing that something you have been trying to fix may need to be accepted instead.

What to expect

I tend to be direct and involved. I will listen carefully, but I am not going to spend the hour simply agreeing with everything you already think. If I notice something that seems important, I will bring it up and we can look at it together. The goal is not just to understand the problem better. It is to help you use that understanding in your actual life.
